Condition (used): poor/barely fair for age (see below) - no dust jacket, the cover/spine has some edge/corner wear and general fairly light wear/marks/grubbiness/discolouration and damage: the outer spine is detached (internal binding unaffected), ink dedication to flyleaf "Christmas 1928", paper separation between title page and flyleaf (internal binding unaffected), frontispiece beginning to detach from the bottom, otherwise the book is fairly good with fairly light marks commensurate with age and use - the pages are generally quite good with light tanning and light foxing throughout .

Identifying marks or labels etc:  "London: Hutchinson & Co (Publishers) Limited".

Other information: hardback without dust jacket -  a important historical book with frontispiece, believed to be the first UK edition, we are uncertain as to the age but would suggest circa 1928 - "Translated together with a foreword by Richard Washburn Child American Ambassador to Italy May 1921 to February 1924" - may be of some interest to a collector.
